Margaret Barth - Reimaginary Friends
My Designer career began at 19 with an apprenticeship at the Santa Fe Opera...I continued for 11 years, working at the Metropolian Opera, Broadway and Off Broadway, PBS Shakespearean Series, Philadelphia Opera, Philadelphia Ballet, Walnut Street Theater, Wilma Theater, Academy of Music in Philadelphia.
Two year of freelancing in Illustration work as well as Fashion design. The world of fashion design left me disenchanted while having a lightbulb moment. I saw much pollution, waterways being destroyed, unfit conditions for sewers, and unfair wages. I knew what i wanted to do yet, there wasn't a word for it...sustainable design would take several decades to catch up.
I worked as a Pattern Maker, Designer and Assistant for Cottage Industry mainly "Art to Wear". I continued for another 7 years for Women owned compaines that mainly designed children's outer wear, high end coats and coutour design. During this time I was experiementing with "upcycled designs" and the concept.
Landed a Sustainable Designer position with a company called "New Threads" . Designed four product lines, trained sewers, opened a retail store and designed the internal space and sold to various wholesale accounts in Philadelphia.
Two and half years later, I was offered a teaching position in 5 school systems in Philadelphia and outer counties. Taught for over 11 years and specialized in "recycled art workshops" and "various fiber workshops" and started an after school program.
Two product line were sold. One to Espirit Corporation and REI...both were "upcycled" children's coats/hats and ski wear.
I loved the whole idea of making something that had a previous life while could reducing consumer waste. I haven't stopped in 20 years and can see so many possibilities. My heart feels full by being part of the solution. Reimaginary Friends was started with a simple concept reduce, reuse and reimagine.
