Description

Maria Eva Jönsson

I grew up in a Swedish family and a Scandinavian shop near Chicago, Illinois. This upbringing was a catalyst for my love and appreciation of fibers and fabric. My godmother gave me my first loom when I was very little. I was fortunate enough to study weaving and other subjects at a Folk College in Sigtuna, Sweden in the 1980s. There I learned many traditional fiber techniques both on and off the loom. I continued my fiber art studies in the US at Northern Illinois University. The fiber art department allowed me great freedoms to experiment with many different types of materials in my fiber art. It is here that I began to experiment with metal. After moving to New Mexico in the 1990s, I continued my exploration with metals and weaving, exhibiting and selling my work in Northern New Mexico. I became a member of the Española Valley Fiber Art Center when they first opened. I have enjoyed taking classes, participating in events like the Fall Fiber Fiesta and the NM Fiber Crawl. It is great to be a part of a local fiber community.

My current fiber work continues to explore unconventional materials in weaving, and woven metal paintings. The painted images represent abstractions from everyday life, a specific moment in time, memories, life events, social issues, or scenes from the natural world. The manipulation of the painted image into a woven structure and how the image is transformed continues to interest me and guide my future work. I see this transformation of the image as an altered state on consciousness and my own visual perception of life itself.
